PTARMIGAN2: the stretch shorts designed for active hiking days

Some outings make trousers feel like too much: a sunlit approach to a climbing route, a hike that starts in the dew and ends in blazing heat, or a day on the move around town between trips. PTARMIGAN2 was made for these moments, in a four-way stretch recycled polyamide knit that moves with your legs without ever pulling on a long stride or a climbing step.

Four-way stretch that never restricts movement

The main fabric, at 175 g/m², combines 79% recycled polyamide and 21% Lycra XTRA-LIFE elastane. The result: lightweight shorts weighing just 202 g that you barely notice once they're on and that always return to their shape, even after several days of carrying a pack.

Zipped pockets keep your gear in place

Two hand pockets, a patch pocket on the right thigh, one at the back on the right seat, and an inner mesh pocket: everything zips closed, so nothing falls out when you sit on a rock or lift your leg high. The belt loops and drawcord by Cousin Trestec complete a fit that stays in place under a climbing harness.

PERFORMANCES

UPF 50+ and water-repellent without PFAS: protection without a second thought

PTARMIGAN2’s fabric has a UPF 50+ rating, meaning it blocks the vast majority of ultraviolet rays that would normally pass through a lightweight knit. On an exposed ridge in midsummer, on a glacier, or on a boat deck, this protection works continuously, unlike sunscreen, which wears off at the first sign of sweat.

The water-repellent treatment applied to the fabric is formulated without fluorinated compounds, so it contains no PFAS. It causes a brief shower or splashes from a stream crossing to bead up, giving the shorts time to dry on their own. The 200 g/m² ripstop reinforcement fabric on the seat gets the same treatment: this is the area that gets wet against a rock or ledge, and the one that wears out fastest during a rappel or a seated break.

202 grams and ECONYL recycled polyamide: lightweight comfort that makes a day

At 202 g, PTARMIGAN2 weighs barely more than a base layer. Over a long day, you notice how light it is less at the start than after six hours of walking, when the fabric doesn’t cling or weigh on your thighs. The 175 g/m² main fabric has a lot to do with that: thin enough to dry quickly after a steep climb, dense enough not to be see-through.

A material made from fishing nets

The ECONYL recycled polyamide used in the shorts comes from waste such as fishing nets, used carpets, and textile scraps, rather than virgin petroleum. Lycra XTRA-LIFE elastane, meanwhile, is chosen for its durability: the shorts hold their shape where conventional stretch fabric loses its elasticity season after season. 63% recycled material overall.

PTARMIGAN2, the first summer base layer for your lower body

Did you know? The ptarmigan, our totem animal, changes its plumage with the seasons: white in winter to blend into the snow, it fluffs up its feathers to protect itself from the cold and smooths them down as soon as the temperature rises. It never carries more than it needs.

PTARMIGAN2 follows the same logic. It sits next to the skin as a base layer, the first layer, which needs to let the body breathe during exertion. In summer, it’s all you need for a hike or a sun-drenched climb. When the weather turns, wear it under waterproof pants or leggings, with no uncomfortable bulk thanks to its 175 g/m² fabric and 4-way stretch.

Fit & support

PTARMIGAN2 Active Fit Shorts: men’s shorts that move with you

PTARMIGAN2 features an Active Fit cut, a close-fitting men’s cut that isn’t tight, designed for walking, climbing, and stepping over obstacles without the fabric pulling at the thighs. The knit’s 4-way stretch does the rest: the shorts move with you instead of restricting you, even when taking a climbing step or making a long traverse uphill.

A waistband that stays put under a harness

The waistband has belt loops and a signature Cousin Trestec drawstring, letting you adjust the waist precisely and keep the shorts in place even with a harness or pack belt over them. Wear them on their own in summer, or under rain pants on unsettled days.

Coupe Active Fit

SIZE GUIDE

Make your equipment last
