PTARMIGAN2: stretch shorts designed for active hiking days

Some outings make trousers feel like too much: a sunny approach to a climbing route, a hike that starts in the morning dew and ends under the blazing sun, or a day spent getting around town between departures. PTARMIGAN2 is made for moments like these, in a four-way stretch recycled polyamide knit that moves with your legs without ever pulling on a long stride or climbing move.

Four-way stretch that never restricts movement

The main fabric, at 175 g/m², combines 79% recycled polyamide and 21% Lycra XTRA-LIFE elastane. The result: lightweight shorts weighing just 202 g that you barely notice once they’re on and that always spring back into shape, even after several days of wear.

Zipped pockets keep your gear secure

Two hand pockets, a patch pocket on the right thigh, one at the back on the right cheek, and an internal mesh pocket: they’re all zipped, so nothing falls out when you sit on a rock or lift your leg high. The belt loops and Cousin Trestec drawcord complete a fit that stays in place under a climbing harness.

PERFORMANCES

UPF 50+ and water-repellent without PFAS: protection without a second thought

PTARMIGAN2’s fabric has a UPF 50+ rating, meaning it blocks the vast majority of ultraviolet rays that would normally pass through a lightweight knit. On an exposed ridge in midsummer, on a glacier, or on a boat deck, this protection works continuously, unlike sunscreen, which wears off at the first sign of sweat.

The water-repellent treatment applied to the fabric is formulated without fluorinated compounds, so it contains no PFAS. It causes a brief shower or splashes from a stream crossing to bead up, giving the shorts time to dry on their own. The 200 g/m² ripstop reinforcement fabric on the seat gets the same treatment: this is the area that gets wet against a rock or ledge, and the one that wears out fastest during a rappel or a seated break.

202 grams and ECONYL recycled polyamide: lightweight comfort that transforms your day

At 202 g, PTARMIGAN2 weighs barely more than a base layer. On a long day, you notice the lightness less at the start than after six hours of walking, when the fabric doesn’t cling or weigh down your thighs. The 175 g/m² of the main fabric has a lot to do with that: fine enough to dry quickly after a steep climb, dense enough not to be see-through.

A material made from fishing nets

The ECONYL recycled polyamide used in the shorts comes from waste such as fishing nets, used carpets, and textile offcuts, rather than virgin oil. The Lycra XTRA-LIFE elastane is selected for its durability: the shorts keep their shape, unlike conventional stretch fabric, which loosens season after season. Overall, 63% recycled material.

PTARMIGAN2, the first layer for your lower body in summer

Did you know? The rock ptarmigan, our totem animal, changes its plumage with the seasons: white in winter to blend in with the snow, it fluffs up its feathers to protect itself from the cold and smooths them down as soon as the temperature rises. It never carries more than it needs.

PTARMIGAN2 follows the same principle. It sits next to the skin as a base layer, allowing the body to breathe during exertion. In summer, it’s all you need for a hike or a sunny climbing route. When the weather turns, wear it under waterproof trousers or tights, with no uncomfortable bulk thanks to its 175 g/m² fabric and 4-way stretch.

Fit & support

Active Fit PTARMIGAN2 cut: men's shorts that move with you

PTARMIGAN2 has an Active Fit cut, a close-fitting men's cut that isn't tight, designed for walking, climbing, and stepping over obstacles without the fabric pulling at the thigh. The four-way stretch fabric does the rest: the shorts move with you instead of restricting you, even during a climbing step or a long uphill traverse.

A waistband that stays put under a climbing harness

The waistband has belt loops and a signature Cousin Trestec drawcord, allowing you to adjust the fit precisely and keep the shorts in place, even with a climbing harness or pack belt over them. Worn on its own in summer, it also layers under rain pants on unsettled days.

Coupe Active Fit

SIZE GUIDE

Make your equipment last
