RYPA: the sheep wool-finish fleece designed for mountaineering

On a ridge climb, the fleece is often the layer you wear for the longest: warm enough for a belay break, breathable enough to keep climbing. RYPA was designed for this role, with 300 g/m² fleece and a sheep wool finish that retains warmth without weighing down your pack.

Reinforced shoulders where the pack rubs

Waterproof fabric panels on the shoulders stand up to carrying a backpack and moving through light snow, an area where a classic fleece gets soaked first. The rest of the garment retains the flexibility of a true midlayer.

Storage designed for the outdoors

Two zipped hand-warmer pockets to warm your fingers between pitches, a Velcro chest pocket accessible while wearing a harness, a raised collar that blocks drafts at the nape, and a YKK coil front zipper to adjust ventilation on the ascent. Stated weight: 530 g.

PERFORMANCES

300 g/m² fleece: the warmth of a sheepskin finish in recycled polyester

The warm heart of RYPA is its 300 g/m² fleece with a sheepskin finish. This high weight for a fleece creates a volume of fibers that traps air warmed by the body, following the same principle as a mountain bird’s fluffed-up feathers. It’s this layer of air that provides insulation, not the material itself.

This fabric is knitted from Newlife Yarns, a recycled polyester made from collected plastic bottles, spun in Italy, then knitted and dyed in Spain. Unlike animal wool, it dries quickly after sustained exertion and doesn’t become damp throughout the day—an important advantage when spending several days in a mountain hut without a chance to dry your gear.

PFAS-free water-repellent fabric on the shoulders: reinforcement where fleece wears out

Fleece always wears out and gets damp in the same place: under the backpack straps. RYPA addresses this weak point with waterproof fabric panels on the shoulders that protect the fleece from friction and light snow showers.

This fabric has a PFAS-free water-repellent treatment: droplets bead up and roll off instead of penetrating the knit, without using the fluorinated compounds that Lagoped excludes from all its treatments. For added practicality, the YKK coil front zipper and Velcro chest pocket complete the reinforcement: open, close, and stow a card or phone with one gloved hand, with your harness buckled, without having to put your pack down.

RYPA, the second insulating layer in the Lagoped system

Did you know? The rock ptarmigan, our totem animal, changes its plumage with the seasons: white in winter to blend in with the snow, it fluffs up its feathers to trap warm air against its body. It constantly adjusts its insulation to the temperature, never wearing more than it needs.

RYPA plays exactly this role in the three-layer system: it is the mid-layer, the second layer, whose purpose is to retain the warmth generated by the body while allowing perspiration to escape. It is worn over a technical base layer close to the body, and under a waterproof outer layer on bad-weather days. In dry, cold conditions, its water-repellent shoulders also let it be worn as an outer layer.

Fit & support

RYPA Regular Fit: a midlayer that lets you move freely

RYPA has a women’s Regular Fit cut, neither tight nor loose. It leaves room for a technical base layer underneath without adding uncomfortable bulk at the armholes, and slips under a waterproof jacket without pulling at the shoulders.

The stand-up collar zips up to the chin to protect the back of your neck when the wind picks up, and the front spiral zipper lets you open it gradually on the ascent, then zip it back up when you stop without taking off your pack. The shoulder panels, firmer than the fleece, give the upper garment a little structure and stay in place under pack straps.

Coupe Regular

Coupe intermédiaire à travers le buste, avec assez d'aisance pour superposer une couche technique en dessous sans compression. Les manches gardent une bonne liberté de mouvement pour les activités outdoor du quotidien, de la randonnée aux sorties en montagne.

SIZE GUIDE

Make your equipment last
