Dressing for hiking means solving a problem that changes every two hours: the climb that makes you sweat, the plateau exposed to the wind, the descent in the rain, the summit in the shade. Lagoped hiking clothes are designed to adapt to these variations without ever multiplying pieces unnecessarily. Each item is made in the European Union from 100% recycled materials, without PFAS, and comes with a 5-year warranty.
The three-layer system in hiking: why it remains the basic rule
The logic of the three layers is not an arbitrary convention. It addresses a concrete problem: the body produces heat during effort, evacuates moisture, and is exposed to cold and wind as soon as it stops. A single piece cannot manage these three situations simultaneously. Three distinct, adapted, and stackable layers can.
The first layer: sweat evacuation
The first layer is in direct contact with the skin. Its role is to wick sweat to the outside to avoid the cold sensation caused by wet fabric clinging to the skin. The TEETREK Technical T-shirt, available in men's and women's versions, and the ROKA Technical T-shirt made of recycled polyamide from fishing nets and carpets, fulfill this function on active outings. For cooler days or high-altitude approaches, the TYTO Thermal T-shirt made of recycled wool provides warmth without sacrificing breathability. The TANKTREK Technical Tank Top and the KEA Women's Bra complete the first layer offering for summer outings.
The second layer: thermal regulation
The second layer is the one you take off during the climb and put back on at the summit. It must therefore be light, compressible, and thermally efficient. The Lagoped range offers several levels of insulation. The JULEECE Micro Fleece and DOHLE Micro Fleece are suitable for mild conditions and sustained efforts. The PHANTOM Technical Fleece and PHANTOM HOODIE provide more warmth for cooler days or long breaks at altitude. The GELINOTTE and GELINOTTE HOODIE, designed for the mountains, offer an additional level of insulation with a cut designed for movement on varied terrain. For cold conditions or bivouacs, the HEYDO2 Down Jacket and HEYDO2 Hoodie, for men and women, are made from recycled polyamide from fishing nets, with a mechanical downproof insulation, not chemical.
The outer layer: waterproofing and wind protection
The outer layer protects against wind, rain, and, in the mountains, sudden changes in conditions. The TETRAS Hiking-Mountain Jacket, available in men's and women's versions, is waterproof with a Sympatex membrane made in Germany. It is PFAS-free: waterproofing is not achieved by fluorinated treatment. The UKPIK Softshell Jacket and NAGALAKA Windbreaker complete the offering depending on the intensity of effort and expected conditions. For continuous effort outings without rain risk, the NAGALAKA blocks the wind without overheating.
Lower body: hiking pants and shorts
Hiking pants are often underestimated when building an outfit. A model that is too stiff restricts stride on steep sections. A model that is too light does not resist rubbing from tall grass or rocks. The PTARMIGAN2 Hiking Pants, for men and women, are designed for demanding outings: technical cut, freedom of movement on climbs, abrasion resistance. The RIOUPOU Hiking Pants prioritize comfort on long distances, with a softer material and a versatile cut. Both models are also available in shorts: PTARMIGAN2 Hiking Shorts and RIOUPOU Hiking Shorts for hot days, complemented by the NYELES Women's Hiking Shorts and PERNICE SH 2 Men's Hiking Shorts for summer outings with low elevation gain.
Accessories and backpack: completing the outfit
A technical hiking outfit is not limited to clothing. The KIIRUNA2 Mountain Backpack completes the equipment for autonomous outings. The unisex SOWA Cap protects the face and neck under strong sunlight. For temperature transitions and early morning hours, the GEBO Technical Beanie and GHEADBAND Headband cover the ears without weighing down the pack. The LUULEA Neck Gaiter and Waist Pack complete the gear for full outings.
Recycled materials, 100% European manufacturing, 5-year warranty
At Lagoped, 100% of the materials used are recycled: polyester from plastic bottles, polyamide from recovered fishing nets and carpets, recycled cotton, recycled wool. Manufacturing is entirely done in the European Union, from thread to finished garment. This is not just a marketing argument: 80% of a garment's environmental impact comes from raw material extraction. Using recycled materials reduces this impact measurably.
Lagoped is the first French textile brand to have published the PEF eco-score across its entire range, an evaluation based on 16 environmental criteria certified by PEF Trust. All hiking clothes come with a 5-year warranty and are repairable. Entrusting a repair to Lagoped costs less than replacing a piece, and that is precisely the goal.
Hiking, trail running, ski touring: bridges between activities
Hiking shares a lot of ground with other activities. Some pieces from the Lagoped hiking wardrobe work directly for other activities: the TETRAS for climbing approaches, the PHANTOM HOODIE as a second layer in ski touring, the PTARMIGAN2 on technical trail routes. To go further, find the dedicated wardrobes: trail, ski touring, and climbing. To choose the right outer layer according to conditions, our guide hardshell, softshell or windbreaker details the technical differences and practical use cases.
Frequently asked questions about hiking clothes
How to dress for hiking?
The answer depends on the duration, elevation gain, and expected weather, but the base remains constant: a three-layer system for the upper body, technical pants or shorts for the lower body, and a waterproof layer always in the pack even in good weather. In the mountains, weather changes quickly and temperatures drop by 0.6 °C every 100 meters of altitude. A lightweight jacket folded at the bottom of the pack can make the difference between an enjoyable outing and an uncomfortable situation. For materials, recycled synthetics like polyester and polyamide dry quickly, resist abrasion, and maintain insulation even when wet, unlike cotton which clings cold as soon as it gets wet.
What clothes to choose for mountain hiking?
In the mountains, three criteria guide the choice: breathability to stay dry during effort, waterproofness to protect against sudden showers, and lightness to avoid carrying a heavy pack. The waterproof jacket is the most important piece not to neglect: below a certain waterproof rating, it saturates and lets water through without warning. Lagoped jackets use a PFAS-free Sympatex membrane, offering waterproofness and breathability without fluorinated chemical treatment. For the rest of the outfit, technical base layers, a compressible fleece, and abrasion-resistant pants cover most situations encountered between 1,000 and 3,000 meters altitude.
