Women’s Fleece Jackets
Choosing a women’s fleece means finding the balance between warmth and freedom of movement, without ever feeling chilled when standing still or overheated during exertion. Lagoped women’s fleeces cover the full range, from compressible micro-fleece to thick fleece for the coldest days, with fits developed specifically for the female body, made in the European Union from 100% recycled materials, without PFAS.
Understanding fleece weights to choose the right fleece
The weight of a fleece, expressed in grams per square meter, directly determines its level of insulation. A lightweight fleece around 100 g/m² is suitable for active use when you are moving continuously. A midweight fleece, around 200 g/m², covers most hiking and mountain activities. Above 300 g/m², fleece becomes a warm layer designed for breaks and the coldest days rather than sustained effort.
Micro-fleeces: lightweight and compressible
The JULEECE Women’s Micro Fleece and DOHLE Women’s Micro Fleece are designed for active use, where weight and packability matter as much as warmth. Compressible, they fit easily into a backpack and work as a lightweight mid-layer beneath a waterproof jacket, or as a standalone layer on a shoulder-season outing when the cold remains moderate.
Technical grid fleeces: breathability and temperature regulation
The GELINOTTE Women’s Technical Mountain Fleece and its hooded version, GELINOTTE HOODIE, use a technical construction designed for the mountains, with a close fit that follows your movements without excess fabric. This category is particularly well suited to activities where exertion levels vary significantly—sustained uphill movement followed by a summit break—without requiring you to constantly change layers.
Thick fleeces: a warm layer for cold conditions
The RYPA Women’s Mountain Fleece sits at the warmest end of the range, with a high weight designed for days when the cold settles in for the long term, in a mountain hut, at a bivouac, or during long breaks at altitude. This is the fleece to choose when pure insulation takes priority over breathability.
Hooded and sleeveless fleeces: specific uses
The HOODEECE Women’s Hooded Fleece provides extra protection around the neck and head, which is useful during outdoor breaks or in cold wind. The unisex SWYPA Sleeveless Fleece serves a different purpose: it insulates the torso, the area that loses the most heat, while keeping the arms free and breathable—a compromise appreciated during fast-paced hiking or climbing, where shoulder mobility is essential.
Valley fleeces: between mountain activities and everyday wear
Not all Lagoped fleeces are designed for high-altitude mountain use. The unisex SWEECE fleece sweatshirt, CARCAJOU unisex crew-neck sweatshirt, and SWEAREC unisex hooded sweatshirt, made from recycled cotton, are intended for more everyday use, in the city or at the end of the day after an outing, with a softer fabric and a less technical fit than the mountain models.
Why a women’s fit makes a real difference to comfort outdoors
A women’s fleece is not simply a resized men’s fleece. The fit is designed for narrower shoulders, a more defined waist, and a different torso length, which directly affects how the fleece performs under a jacket or with a backpack. A fleece that fits poorly around the shoulders creates air pockets that let cold air in, while an overly loose fit prevents effective layering with other garments. Lagoped models developed specifically for the female body, such as the GELINOTTE and RYPA Women’s, are field-tested to ensure this fit rather than simply being resized from a men’s pattern.
Why weight alone is not enough to choose a fleece
Weight provides a useful indication, but it does not tell the whole story. Individual metabolism plays an important role: two people exposed to the same conditions may have very different warmth needs. Activity intensity also matters: a fleece suitable for a relaxed hike can become uncomfortable during sustained effort on a ski tour, when sweat quickly builds up beneath a layer that is too insulating. Finally, a fleece never works alone: it is part of a layering system, between a technical base layer that wicks away moisture and an outer layer that protects against wind and rain.
Recycled materials, European manufacturing, and a 5-year warranty
All Lagoped fleeces are made from recycled polyester sourced from plastic bottles, spun and woven in Europe. Manufacturing is carried out entirely in the European Union, from yarn to finished garment, without the use of PFAS at any stage. This choice has a measurable impact: 80% of a garment’s environmental impact comes from raw-material extraction, and using recycled rather than virgin polyester directly reduces this share of its footprint.
Each product in the range has a PEF eco-score, an assessment based on 16 environmental criteria certified by PEF Trust. Lagoped is the first French clothing brand to publish this indicator across its entire range. All fleeces come with a 5-year warranty and can be repaired, a rare commitment for a garment that is washed and used as regularly as a mountain fleece.
Complete your layering system
A fleece rarely works alone outdoors. Frequently asked questions about women’s fleeces
How do you choose a women’s fleece for the season?
In winter, fleece forms part of a complete layering system: it is worn beneath a puffer jacket or waterproof jacket as an insulating mid-layer. A lightweight or midweight fleece, such as the JULEECE or GELINOTTE, is generally sufficient because the outer layer already provides protection from the cold. During the shoulder seasons, fleece can be worn on its own as an outer layer: a warmer fleece such as the RYPA is then a good choice, especially for morning outings when temperatures remain low. In summer, a lightweight fleece or sleeveless vest such as the SWYPA remains useful for cool evenings at altitude, even in the middle of the warm season.
What is the difference between a women’s and men’s fleece?
The difference mainly comes down to fit and proportions. A women’s fleece is tailored for narrower shoulders, a more defined waist, and a torso length that is generally shorter than that of a men’s model in the same size. Wearing a men’s fleece as a woman can result in excess fabric around the shoulders and torso, making it harder to layer and allowing cold air in through overly wide sleeves. The technical performance itself—insulation, breathability, and weight—remains comparable between Lagoped’s two ranges: only the fit changes to suit the body shape. Some models, such as the GELINOTTE, are developed exclusively for the women’s range, with no direct men’s equivalent.
