In France, in our mountains, certain forests have been forgotten, little exploited and have been able to evolve freely.

In these forests we find very particular, specialized and rare fauna.

I am lucky to have several old forests not far from my home. This spring I spent some time there looking for two unusual birds, the Tengmalm's Owl and the Three-toed Woodpecker.

Tengmalm's Owl

The tengmalm is one of the two small mountain owls. During breeding season, it emits a very recognizable song that drives any naturalist crazy.

The three-toed woodpecker

The three-toed woodpecker is one of the rarest birds in France, there are only about a hundred pairs, almost exclusively located in the Alps. This bird is very discreet, it hardly sings and finding it is really not easy. So when in a flap of its wings this little black and gray bird quickly lands on the trunk of an old spruce, it is a very emotional moment.

Our forests are rich, crucially important but fragile environments. They will be of enormous help to us in the environmental challenges ahead. Let us take care of them.
