PTARMIGAN2: the technical stretch pants for demanding hikes

On a trail that turns into a scree slope, then an easy scramble to reach the ridge, you don’t want to think about your pants. PTARMIGAN2 was built for this: a four-way stretch recycled polyamide fabric that moves with your leg through a long stride without ever pulling at the knee or hip.

Ripstop reinforcement where the rubbing really happens

The seat, thighs, and knees are made with a water-repellent stretch ripstop fabric that’s denser than the rest of the pants. These are the areas that take the most wear when you sit on a rock, kneel on a slab, or brush against granite. The rest of the pants stays lightweight and supple, weighing 298 g in the reference size.

Four pockets designed for hiking

Two hand pockets, one thigh pocket on the right, and one back pocket on the right, all with zippers. Plenty of room to keep a map, phone, or energy bar handy without losing anything on the descent. The belt loops can accommodate a slim belt if your backpack compresses your waist at the end of the day.

4-way stretch and UPF 50+ protection through knitting

The pants are made from 175 g/m² knit fabric in recycled ECONYL polyamide and Lycra elastane, knitted to stretch in four directions. In practice, the leg lifts over a rocky ledge, the knee bends on a slab, and the fabric returns to shape without bagging.

Chemical-free UV protection

This same knit achieves a UPF 50+ rating through its construction alone: the knit’s density filters the radiation, rather than a chemical finish. There are two benefits: the protection doesn’t wear off after repeated washes, and no additional substances are added to the fabric. That matters on a glacier or during a long, sun-exposed ridge traverse.

Water-repellent stretch ripstop reinforcements: durability where it matters

At the seat, thighs, and knees, PTARMIGAN2 uses 200 g/m² stretch ripstop fabric woven in Isère. Ripstop prevents a tear from spreading, which makes all the difference when you’re squeezing between two boulders or sitting on a sharp ridge for a break.

Water repellency without fluorinated compounds

These panels have a PFAS-free water-repellent treatment: water from wet grass, a damp rock, or a brief shower beads on the surface instead of soaking into the fabric, without using fluorinated compounds. And the fabric stays flexible, since the reinforcement remains stretchy and moves in the same direction as the main knit.

PTARMIGAN2, the first lower-body layer in the Lagoped system

Did you know? The rock ptarmigan, our totem animal, changes its plumage with the seasons: white in winter to blend into the snow, it fluffs up its feathers to trap air and protect itself from the cold. It constantly adjusts its protection, never wearing more than necessary.

PTARMIGAN2 acts as an inner layer for the lower body: worn next to the skin, it wicks away moisture from exertion and lets the legs breathe while walking. In cold weather, slip a thin technical base layer underneath. When rain or wind sets in, add waterproof overtrousers on top to complete the protection without the two garments getting in each other's way, thanks to the close-fitting Active Fit cut.

PTARMIGAN2 is available in a women's Active Fit cut: fitted through the leg but never restrictive, thanks to four-way stretch fabric. The pants follow the thigh and calf without feeling loose, providing real comfort when wearing gaiters or putting on crampons.

A waistband that adjusts with your pack

The belt loops let you add a slim belt and tighten the waist during the day, when your backpack's hip belt presses against your hips. The hand pockets remain accessible with a climbing harness on.

What to wear underneath and over it

Worn directly against the skin for most of the year, it can accommodate a thin technical base layer underneath in cold weather, and can be covered with waterproof overtrousers when the weather turns bad.
