Clothing materials with UPF 50+ sun protection

Exposing yourself to the sun during a hike, trail run, or a day in the mountains is not trivial. UV rays act continuously, even on cloudy days, and their effect accumulates without being visible. Clothing made from fabrics certified UPF 50+ offers a permanent physical barrier, without the need for sunscreen or reapplication. Lagoped offers a selection of technical pieces made from fabrics with a certified UPF 50+ protection factor, manufactured in the European Union from 100% recycled fibers.

Understanding the UPF 50+ Certification on Textile Fabrics

UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, measures a fabric's ability to block ultraviolet rays. A UPF 50+ rating means the material filters at least 98% of UVA and UVB rays. This is the highest certification in this category.

It is important to specify that it is the fabric itself that is certified, not the garment as a whole. Protection depends on the fabric used, the density of its weave, and the fibers it contains. A tightly woven recycled polyamide can naturally reach this rating without added chemical treatment. This is the case for the fabrics used in the pieces in this selection, all made without PFAS.

Categories of UPF 50+ Fabric Clothing at Lagoped

Technical T-shirts and Shirts

The ROKA Technical T-shirt, available in men's and women's versions, is made from recycled polyamide sourced from recovered fishing nets and carpets. Its UPF 50+ certified fabric makes it a suitable choice for long exposed outings, trail running, hiking, or gravel biking. The RAICHO Unisex Technical Shirt, with long sleeves, covers more surface area and is suitable for activities with prolonged sun exposure: mountain hiking, climbing, or sailing.

Shorts and Pants

The RIOUPOU and PTARMIGAN2 hiking shorts, as well as the MILVUS trail shorts, are made with UPF 50+ certified fabrics. For more complete leg protection, the PTARMIGAN2 and RIOUPOU pants, available for men and women, offer extended coverage without sacrificing breathability or freedom of movement.

Windbreaker Jacket and Accessories

The NAGALAKA Unisex Windbreaker Jacket is made from recycled polyester with UPF 50+ certified fabric. Lightweight and packable, it provides additional protection against wind and sun for high-altitude outings. The SOWA Unisex Cap completes sun protection on areas not covered by clothing, especially the face and neck.

Recycled Fabrics, Made in the European Union

All pieces in this selection are made from 100% recycled materials: polyamide from fishing nets and carpets, polyester from plastic bottles. Manufacturing is fully carried out in the European Union, from yarn to finished garment. Each item in the range has an eco-score PEF, an evaluation based on 16 environmental criteria published by Lagoped, the first French textile brand to make this indicator public. The entire wardrobe is guaranteed for 5 years and repairable.

Frequently Asked Questions About UPF 50+ Anti-UV Fabric Clothing

What does the UPF 50+ rating on a garment mean?

UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, measures a fabric's ability to block ultraviolet rays. A UPF 50+ rating indicates the material filters at least 98% of UVA and UVB rays, compared to about 5 to 7% for a classic cotton T-shirt. This is the highest certification in this category. At Lagoped, it is the fabrics themselves that are certified UPF 50+, thanks to their composition of recycled technical fibers and the density of their weave, without added chemical treatment.

Does a UPF 50+ fabric garment replace sunscreen?

It effectively protects the areas it covers, permanently and without reapplication, even when the fabric is wet from sweat. This is a concrete advantage over sunscreen, which degrades with effort and must be reapplied every two hours. However, the garment does not cover everything: the face, neck, hands, and uncovered areas remain exposed. Complete sun protection outdoors therefore combines pieces made from UPF 50+ certified fabrics, a cap or neck gaiter, and sunscreen on uncovered parts of the body.
