JULEECE3: the half-zip microfleece designed as a mountain midlayer

On a mountaineering outing or a hike that starts in the shade, the real challenge isn't staying warm at the start; it's avoiding sweat on the climb and then keeping from getting cold during a break. The JULEECE3 microfleece was made for just that situation, when you wear the same layer from the parking lot to the summit.

A brushed fleece that keeps you warm without trapping heat

Its 240 g/m² fleece is brushed on the inside to trap a thin layer of warm air next to your body, and smooth on the outside so it slides under a jacket without snagging. Made with 92% recycled polyester and 8% elastane, it moves with your shoulders without pulling, whether you're climbing steep slopes or pushing off with trekking poles.

Simple details, tested in use

The 3 mm YKK coil half-zip lets you open the collar when your pace picks up and zip it back up as soon as the wind gets up. The snug cuffs block drafts from creeping up your sleeves, and the heart embroidery replaces the printed label that always ends up peeling off.

JULEECE3 uses 240 g/m² fleece, a midweight fabric: dense enough to retain warmth during a break or on a chilly morning start, yet light enough to keep you from overheating on a steady climb. The complete garment weighs 310 grams, making it easy to bring along every time without a second thought. The brushed interior creates a fluffy surface that traps warm air against the body, while the smooth exterior lets moisture pass through to the next layer. It’s made from recycled polyester sourced from plastic bottles, a fiber that dries quickly and doesn’t soak up water like a natural knit would.

3 mm YKK Half-Zip and Snug Cuffs: Adjust Your Temperature Without Stopping

In the mountains, you rarely manage your temperature by taking off a layer; you manage it at the collar. JULEECE3's 3 mm YKK coil half-zip opens with one hand, even with gloves on, to let out excess heat when the slope gets steeper, and zips all the way up as soon as the wind picks up on a ridge. It's the quickest adjustment there is, and saves you from opening your pack every time your pace changes. The snug cuffs complete the design: they keep cold air from creeping up your sleeves and stay in place when you pull a jacket on over them. The knit's 8% elastane provides the stretch you need to keep the shoulders from pulling during a climbing move or a pole push.

Did you know? The rock ptarmigan, our totem animal, changes its plumage with the seasons: white in winter to blend into the snow, it fluffs up its feathers to trap warm air when the temperature drops. It constantly adjusts its insulation, never wearing more than it needs.

JULEECE3 serves exactly this purpose in the layering system: as the mid-layer, its role is to retain the heat produced by the body while allowing moisture to escape. It is worn over a technical base layer next to the skin and under a waterproof, windproof outer layer when the weather turns bad. In cold, dry weather, it works perfectly well on its own as a lightweight jacket.

Fit & support

Men’s Regular Fit: microfleece that layers easily

JULEECE3 comes in a men’s Regular Fit, neither tight nor loose. It follows the body closely enough to work well as a mid-layer, while leaving room for a long-sleeved technical base layer underneath without uncomfortable creasing around the shoulders and back, where a backpack sits.

The smooth outer finish plays a big part in this: a waterproof jacket slips over it without rubbing or pushing the sleeves up when you quickly pull it on at the collar. The snug cuffs stay in place under a jacket sleeve and don’t slip when you put your gloves back on. The half-zip lets you adjust ventilation at the collar without taking the fleece off, which is useful when alternating between strenuous climbs and short stops.
